Differences in Leather Used For Handbags
There are many different types of leather that is used to craft handbags. We are going to discuss each type and what they are commonly used for. Think of this as an informational guide to help you choose what handbag you should choose based on the leather that it is made of.
Cowhide and Lambskin Leather
Cowhide leather comes from the skin of a cow. I am sure you probably could have guessed this just by reading the name. Cowhide leather is more tough and durable. A purse or handbag made from cowhide leather will last you longer when compared to other types of leathers. Many high-end designers use the best cowhide leather to craft their purses, such as Louis Vuitton and Coach.
Lambskin leather comes from the skin of a sheep. Lots of people like handbags made of lambskin because of its super smooth and buttery soft feel. Handbags made from lambskin leather usually tend to be smaller because the availability of lambskin is lower than cowhide. Also when carrying a handbag made of lambskin leather, you need to be sure to treat it with care. Since the leather is softer and smooth, the leather is weaker in construction and can tear or rip more easily than those made of cowhide.
Faux and Patch Leather
Faux leather is fake leather. It gives the appearance of real leather without the high cost. This is great for people on a budget or for people who are for animal rights. Many people do not know how to tell the difference between faux leather and real leather. One way you can always tell is real leather will show creases that happen over time and faux leather will not.
Patch Leather is exactly what it sounds like. Handbags made with this leather are made of different types of leather in many different patches. When making handbags with patch leather manufacturers use what is left over from making other leather handbags. Because of this patch leather handbags are not as expensive as cowhide or lambskin handbags, but are more expensive than faux leather because the handbag is still made from real leather.
Choosing which one is right for you is totally dependent on your preferences. They all have their own set of pros and cons, but ultimately are all beautiful. Personally I love Junior Drake handbags that are made of buttery soft lambskin leather, but the choice is yours.
